Hello and welcome to the irregular update, A Word Please, the official newsletter of The Writing Prof.

We (I?) haven’t gone anywhere, yet. With all of the hubbub about changes around here at Medium, I’m still very much alive and well, intrigued and interested in this platform. But I do have news! A good thing for a “news”letter, wouldn’t you say? Let’s not delay.

First things first — I am a writing process expert and I can teach you how to write or how to improve your writing process. However, I do not offer courses for succeeding on Medium beyond your wildest dreams and making boo-coup bucks! In fact, I will be writing about how much I detest the MLM-like, cult-like, Infomercial-like, Pyramid Scheme-like course selling on Medium.

I taught college writing for 25 years. If you want to learn to write, I can teach you how to write! Contact me at lee_hornbrook@yahoo.com.

1 — New substack

My substack is My Own Private Waste Land: T.S. Eliot, Mental Illness, and the Making of a Memoir. It’s follows my journey to seek traditional publication for my memoir, My Own Private Waste Land.

After 3 1/2 years, I completed my memoir in May, though I’m tinkering with it in a writing group (shoutout to EfW!).

Please support my efforts to build audience for my publication efforts. You can find my substack here: https://leehornbrook.substack.com. Best of all, it’s FREE!

Please follow if you are interested in:

  • Memoir
  • T.S. Eliot and The Waste Land
  • Mental Illness — major depression, suicide, borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder
  • Writing and Publishing
  • The Query Process

2 — Editing Business

With my years in higher education as an English teacher, I am now actively seeking a certificate in developmental editing. I’ve even landed my first client.

If you have a manuscript in need of:

  • Manuscript review
  • Developmental editing
  • Copy editing
  • Proofreading

Please contact me at lee_hornbrook@yahoo.com. More on that as it develops.

3 — The Writing Prof Seeks Writers

As always, The Writing Prof seeks writers to write about writing, the writing process, language, books, grammar and punctuation, linguistics, as well as personal essays.

We do not have complicated rules about submission formats and guidelines. That doesn’t mean we accept everything. On the contrary, the subject and the writing must be good. However, if a particular essay isn’t ready for prime time, I will work with you to get it ready rather than send you a curt rejection.

I want to see you succeed with your writing, not fill up the pages of The Writing Prof with just anything.

If you want to contribute or become a writer for The Writing Prof, check out our “contribute” page: https://medium.com/thewritingprof/contribute-to-the-writing-prof-4a93057a25c

4 — Moving to Seattle

I’m moving from Atlanta to Seattle at the end of August. It will be my 4th cross-country relocation in 4 years, from Calif to Conn back to Calif to Georgia to Seattle. I have a feeling we’ll be staying for a while. I’m excited to get back to the West Coast and be near navigable water — sailing and kayaking, here I come!

Despite the move, I will continue writing and editing. Follow along!

That’s my update. Thank you for hanging in there with us.

Just keep writing!
